After Hurricane Marie passed through Southern California, we headed out to explore Laguna Beach and see what the coastline actually looked like after the storm.

Crescent Bay: Leopard Sharks & Underwater Exploration
One of the highlights of our trip was Crescent Bay.
We captured underwater footage and explored the south side of the bay, an area known for encounters with leopard sharks at certain times of year and under the right conditions.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but this is one of the reasons Laguna Beach can be such an interesting place to snorkel. You're not simply swimming from one sandy beach to another—you're exploring a coastline with different underwater environments packed into a relatively small area. Yet the South side of Crescent Bay always seems to have leopard sharks swarming around the rock reek in shallow water (3-25 feet deep)
Woods Cove Snorkeling
We also spent time snorkeling at Woods Cove, documenting the conditions and giving you a firsthand look at what you can expect when entering the water.
Like many Laguna Beach snorkeling locations, conditions can change dramatically from one day to the next. A cove that looks perfect from shore may have poor visibility after a swell, while another location nearby can be considerably better.
That's why timing and conditions matter so much. We recommend low tide and 1-2 foot surf maximum, and low wind (5-10 Knots). The longer these key factors are good, the better the visibility.
What Does Laguna Beach Look Like After a Major Storm?
This trip gave us a chance to see something you don't always get from a typical snorkeling video.
Hurricane Marie had affected portions of the coastline, and some coves were noticeably messier than normal. In some locations, visibility was reduced and conditions weren't particularly inviting.
But other areas still provided some surprisingly good underwater views.
That's an important part of exploring Laguna Beach: the same location can look completely different depending on swell, tide, water clarity and recent weather.
A beautiful snorkeling destination doesn't necessarily mean it's a good snorkeling destination today.
When Is the Best Time to Snorkel Laguna Beach?
There isn't one magic day or time that guarantees great snorkeling.
Before heading into the water, it's worth considering:
Tide
Ocean swell
Water clarity
Visibility
Wind
Recent storms
Surf conditions
The particular cove you're visiting
A protected cove may behave very differently from an exposed section of coastline only a short distance away.

One of the things we enjoy most about exploring Laguna is discovering how many different coastal locations are packed into such a small area.
Some locations are more beginner-friendly.
Some require calmer ocean conditions.
Some involve rocky entries and require extra care.
Some are better around certain tides.
