Most people head into Southern California's Los Padres National Forest near Ojai expecting dry brush, dusty fire roads, and exposed canyon heat. But if you know where to drop off the main trail, the canyon reveals something straight out of a tropical daydream: clear emerald rock pools, fern-draped mossy caves, and hidden cascading waterfalls hidden far beyond where standard maps end.
This is the trek to Matilija Grotto Falls — widely considered one of the best off-trail waterfall adventures in Southern California.

The Journey: From Ranch Road to Secret Tributaries
The adventure begins at the Matilija Canyon Falls trailhead. The first mile leads you along a paved easement past private ranches before the dirt trail takes over. While standard hikers stick to the higher mountain trail toward the main falls, the real secret to surviving—and enjoying—this trek on a hot day is creek-hopping early.
The Ranch Junction: After passing the last ranch house, drop into the Matilija Creek bed.
Canyon Scrambling & Pool Hopping: Instead of battling exposed brush, you wade and boulder-scramble directly up the stream. Deep, shaded rock pools line the canyon floor, perfect for quick dips to keep your core temperature down.
The Unmarked Fork: Beyond the main waterfall zone that most day-trippers target, a hidden secondary tributary branches off deeper into the wilderness. This is where route-finding skills become essential.
Safety Note: There are no signs, cell service, or maintained trail markers past the main creek junction. Navigating requires comfort with boulder scrambling, wet feet, and off-trail route finding.
High Point: The Grotto & The Mountain Infinity Pool

Scrambling up the narrow canyon walls brings you to the crown jewel: The Grotto Falls. Water cascades over carved rock into a cool, shaded cave lined with hanging maidenhair ferns.
Pushing about 100 yards above the grotto reveals an incredible natural infinity pool perched on the rock ledge, offering sweeping views of the surrounding Los Padres mountains and rugged canyon landscape.
Further up, two additional cascading waterfalls feature deep swimming holes—a reward few hikers ever get to see.
Essential Trail Breakdown

1.Prep Offline Navigation:Before leaving home.
Download offline GPS topo maps or satellite route files. Cell service drops completely near the trailhead.
2.Pack Wet-Weather & Safety Gear:Essential gear.
Wear sticky-soled approach shoes or sturdy trail runners that drain fast. Bring a water filter (creek water is abundant) and a dry bag for electronics during deep swims.
3.Pace & Cool Off:On the trail.
Keep a steady pace over slippery river rocks. Take advantage of early creek pools to stay cool before reaching the off-trail canyon climb.
If pre paired, this could be your next SoCal Waterfall Hike. Personally it stands as my all time favorite hiking experience, we hiked, we climbed, and swam all in one adventure. The wilderness and raw natural beauty was off the charts, highly recommend this trek.
